Why am I getting error: "Can't convert to PDF: Network request failed: error Please retry running the merge action. URL: File size was..."?

This error indicates that the resulting PDF file produced in the merge action is larger than our set limits. Our documentation states a limit of 1MB per PDF output. There is a per-org customization available on a case by case basis to increase the limit of PDFs generated so if the merge action you created will consistently create larger files this might be a path to consider. We can work with the engineering team to set this up. Setup costs may apply. Contact support@apsona.com for more information.

In the meantime here are some ideas on reducing the output file size:

  • Changing your Output Structure: If the data source for your merge action includes many thousands of records, you may hit this file size limit. Especially if you have chosen the output structure of "Single file with page breaks" or "Single file with paragraph breaks". Consider changing your output structure to "Separate files, one for each record"
  • Reducing your data source: If the data source for your merge action includes many thousands of records, you may hit this file size limit, even if you have chosen "Separate files" as your output structure. Consider reducing your report to fewer records. This allows the merge action to run on fewer records, which may help to not hit this limit. There may be the consequence of having to run the merge action multiple times on different subsets of records. If this is not a feasible option, we can continue to brainstorm solutions with you.
  • Reduce the file size of the merge template: If the template itself has many pictures, or other complex aspects to it like complex formatting or conditional logic, or simply many pages of text; then each output file size will be larger. Consider pairing down your template so that the output size of the merged document is smaller. With regards to images, try to reduce their size to the smallest possible through an external image editor before importing it into your template.
